CBI at Adot Shalom

Welcome to Adot Shalom!  My name is Kim Fortner and I will be teaching Community Based Instruction (CBI) at Adot Shalom this year. The classroom paraprofessional is Lesley Hoskin.

Course Description

This CBI located at Adot Shalom is a realistic job training opportunity for students in a landscaping setting. Some of the specific duties are cutting grass, spreading mulch, raking, weeding and using some of the machinery. Students will leave for Adot Shalom at 9:30 and return back to school by 1:15. Students are expected to follow safety rules as well as school rules while at LTP and at Adot Shalom.

Course Objective

This is a hands-on class designed to teach appropriate work behaviors needed to be successful in the workplace.To accomplish this goal, students will identify and develop skills that are transferable from one occupation to another.

Course Outline

The focus of the class is learning positive worker skills and what employers expect in the workplace. Listed below are some of these skills.

  • Initiative
  • Independence

Student Responsibilities

Students should dress appropriately for their worksite. They may wear jeans, a t-shirt and comfortable, closed toed shoes. Sandals and flip flops are not appropriate. Since students will be working outside, they should check the weather beforehand so they are dressed appropriately for the conditions. Students are expected to come to class wearing the appropriate clothes as there will not be any time to change prior to leaving.

Punctuality and attendance are also important components of the class. Students should notify their teacher in advance if they expect to be late or absent.

Lunch

Students will job train at Adot Shalom five days a week and eat lunch at the site this year. If students wish to purchase their lunch or receive a free or reduced lunch they will be provided a bag lunch made at the Skill Center.
